Verm-X

I use Verm-X for Chickens in between my 6 monthly worming using Flubenvet. I have found it to work well. It is a herbal product so as well as offering internal parasite control, it also is providing some useful goodness to keep my girls healthy.

Verm-X herbal parasite control

As a herbal product that provides internal parasite control, the producers of Verm-X  have to follow the rules and regulations which all herbal medicines have to follow: It is called internal parasite control, rather than “anthelmintic” or “wormer” since it is not a licensed medicine (like for example flubenvet). DEFRA agreed the description of “herbal internal parasite control product” however Verm-X would not be allowed to pubish results of tests and trials or describe the properties of the herbs used in the formulation of Verm-X for example.

Verm-X was awarded full Ethical Accreditation which is an independent endorsement awarded by the Ethical Company Organisation (ECO). This rewards corporate social responsibility including ethical diligence towards people, animals, and the environment.

Verm-X spend quite a reasonable amount of money on marketing as they occupy space in many of the poultry magazines and the product is widely available throughout the UK. More recently, they have acquired Organic Certification for their Smallholder Packs.

Verm-X for chickens comes in a number of different sizes for different sized flocks of chickens. It is available in liquid or pellet forms.

The biggest advantage I see with Verm-X is that worm burdens are reduced gradually using the product which reduces the ‘stripping’ of the gut wall that takes place after worming with medicines designed to kill worms.

  1. Hi Have you seen the research that was done on verm-x which showed no difference in egg burden after three days dosing of verm-x ? They did a before and after egg count , just made me think it was a bit of a waste of money.

    • Yes, I have read this and asked Verm-X about it. The explanation I was given was that they had performed their own trials (that are not allowed to be published) and the trial was done over a very short period of time which doesn’t allow a herbal product to work. From the worm counts I have done myself over the years, I believe it is helping my birds but it would be good to have an independent trial performed over a longer period of time to see how well it worked.

It has to be taken into consideration with the fact that the report was written by the makers of Flubenvet.

I notice that some packs of Verm-X come with a worm testing kit now. This surely is the ultimate way to prove your hens do or don’t have a worm problem?

      • I live up north near Canada and to my experience I have had up to a 6 foot fence and still cant keep the bueggrs in so I let them free range around my yard and woods they come back at night and sleep in the chicken shed. So when you find out please let me know. .I have been raising chickens peacocks guineas ducks and turkeys for over 20 years ..

  2. I also heard that the trials were flawed in several areas. I have been using Verm-X on my girls for two years now and they are very healthy 🙂

  3. How do you use Verm-X? What’s best liquid or pellet form? How often should i give it to them? Would like to know the best way to adminster this. Thanks

    • I have been using the pellet form, although you could of course use either. I mix it in with the pellets.

The amount is 2.5g per bird per day for 3 days a month. I always go for the beginning of the month so I remember when to give it to them. There is a 2.5g scoop in the pack which makes it easy to measure out.

      • Yes, I used the pack you mentioned with the worm count kits included. They were 450epg (medium count) before and 100epg (low count) after. It was not the easiest task to get the poo collected but did a little ‘collection’ for each worm count to try and get a good ‘all round’ view of what the counts were.

I am happy and my hens seem to enjoy it which is great.

  4. My whole flock was sick and with bloody stool. After 10 days of Amprollium and no improvement, I tried VermX. After day 1 stools were so much firmer. Day 2 I thought I was in big trouble when I saw the most horrible bloody and nasty stools I have seen yet. I gave them day 3 anyway and was amazed that stools were almost normal the next morning. Apparently after doing much research, I read that wormers can cause the chicken to expel parasites and nasties that have been in them. I have been continuing with the VermX beyond the 3 recommended days, as some were sicker than others. It is now day 7 and all poop is the best I have ever seen. I will continue with the VermX for a few more days and then cut back the dosage in their drinking water daily for a while. I want to be sure that they will get 100% healthy before I stop the VermX completely. I also added diluted oil of oregano and grapefruit seed extract at around day 4, which I know are both safe for chickens.
