  1. Hello I am a new owner of 4 hen which I’ve had since chicks in March we live in Spain and we have a large area of land for them to freerange on ,they are my pride and joy ,they have a lovely hen house for night-time , resently I have noticed one of my girls has had runny poo ,because they rome around throughout the day once they go to bed I clean-up behind them .
I have read about worming on your site ,would this be the reason for runny poo .
They have really good feed from our local supplier which they love ,
it would be good to get your advise on this matter .
    regards Lesley

    • Yes, worms can cause runny poo although there are other diseases that will also cause this. I would make sure they are wormed first, before looking for other causes.

Excessive greens like cabbage can also cause the same symptoms though so it might not be serious!

  2. Hi we are just going to keep a couple of chickens for my grand daughter I found your sight very helpful. I will use it again to make sure im doing things properly. Thank you Betty

    • It could be a cold but could also be Mycoplasma Galliscepticum which is common in back yard chickens. The secondary infection chickens get from this disease is usually infection in the upper respiritory tract – flu like symptoms. Wheezing, sneezing and tell tale bubbles in the corners of the eyes.
This really is outside the scope of this site and I would suggest you read about this on the poultrykeeper.com website: The Poultry Diseases section has information on respiritory problems in chickens and Mycoplasma Gallicepticum.

  3. I have had 4 Hens since August, 3 are laying but my 4th hasn’t developed her comb and she seems to be moulting round her tail feathers. I just wondered if there could be a problem – any advice greatly appreciated

    • Very hard to say without examination – hens will moult at this time of year but young pullets won’t usually moult in their first winter. It could be lice around the tail end – check at the base of feathers below the vent for lice eggs. They look like crystallised sugar lumps. The comb could be because she is a different breed…
