  1. In the past week or so I have noticed blood stains on the outer shell of the odd egg. I believe these eggs are being laid by one of my older hybrids. I have two hybrids and they are about four years old. Is this normal?

    • It can happen from time to time if there is a small tear in the Oviduct. Say ouch and thank you to the hen 😉

  2. Hi I have a 30 week old Ancona who is laying beautiful white eggs however her bottom seems really sore and the feathers appear to have been ‘plucked’ There appears to be a bald patch around 3cms across and although not actually bleeding it looks very red and scratched. I have not seen her, or any of the other hens and rooster pecking at her. Other than that she seems quite lively & healthy and is laying. Any ideas please??? Also my Columbian Black keeps laying ‘monster’ eggs. I have had her 6 weeks and she lays every day, what I would call large eggs, but has laid 3 eggs each over 3 1/2 inches long. Is this normal??? many thanks if you can help

    • I would check her for lice – usually eggs are like granulated sugar, clumps found at the base of feather shafts immediately below the bottom which can then pick up droppings.
Also, are they wormed? A mucky bottom can be caused by internal parasites.

Large eggs can happen… often from younger high production hens, that sometimes have multiple yolks. If she’s over a year old then probably genetic and should cause no harm as long as she can pass them.

  3. Hello,
Great site. Last Friday 27.4.12 I bought two chickens (Warrens) they are point of lay. They were quite timid but as each day goes by they are becoming more confident. One of them seems to have a wet bottom, is it just where she sits in her droppings or could it indicate something else. Otherwise she is happy and cute. Many thanks.

  4. Hi, Noticed today that my Maran had a red bulge at the rear with heavily soiled feathers. Bathed her in warm salty water, thinking she is egg bound with a prolapse. After that she started to bleed a little. Cant feel any egg there and cant push the prolapse back, it just wont stay. Im fearing the worst for tomorrow, dont want her to suffer. Any advice appreciated.

    • Sorry to hear this. Usually euthanasia is the kindest option with prolapse as it usually re-occurs and the other hens may peck it which will obviously be terribly painful and will usually cause them to bleed to death. Sorry for the bad news…
